Boston and Haiti

Introduction

An ambassador is an official envoy of the sending country that represents his or her own country in the foreign country. He or she is a highly ranked diplomatic official appointed and accredited to represent his country in the foreign country. An ambassador will represent his country on various issues: will represent his country on international policies, carries the image of the sending country, and acts as a link between the sending state and the receiving one on delicate confidential and diplomatic matters. Boston is the capital of the largest city in Massachusetts, its also seen as the unofficial capital England because of its impact on the economy and the culture of New England region as the whole. With its large population, Boston has become the fifth-largest Combined Statistical Area in the United States of America. Back in history in 1630 when the Puritan colonists from England founded the city of Shawmut Peninsula, in early 18^th century, Boston become the location of the main events during the America Revolution, this includes the Boston Tea Party and Boston Massacre. Many early battles of the America Revolution, like the Battle of Bunker Hill and the Siege of Boston, happened within the city and its environs. Through several stages of land reclamation and municipal annexation, the city became big beyond the Peninsula.

When the American independence was declared the city become one of the major places for shipping port and manufacturing center, with its rich history of tourist scenes the city attracted many tourists hence stabilizing its economy. With large population due to various activities within the city and its environs, the idea of education could not be left out. The public schools emerged like, Boston Latin School (1635). With the emergence of many schools and colleges and universities in Boston, it became an international center of higher education and a center for medicine. The good political structures in the U.S. have contributed greatly to the development of Boston as the whole. With the history of early independence in the United States in 1776, it enabled the early political, economical and more so social organization during the early days. This has played an integral part in the entire development of Boston. As ambassador of Boston, Mass to Haiti would like to compare the two states that is, my country which is Boston and Haiti based on:

Religion

In common cases, the mother colony will contribute 80% religion of the colonized country. And in this relation, most of the Haitian people are Catholics estimate 80% of the population, 16% worship with other denominations and perhaps 4% are not clear where they belong. Therefore, the Catholicism has been enshrined in the Haitian constitution. With one common religion favored in the Haitian constitution, there has been the limitation of people to subscribe to other different faiths unlike in the States and Boston where the free of worship is guaranteed to everyone. People in the United States and Boston are free under their constitution to worship in any denomination that they wish. Back in history when the division of Roman Catholic and protestant occurred in Rome the Boston people have enjoyed the freedom of worship. Unlike in Boston, where Catholicism has not been enshrined in its constitution and people have the right to worship in any denomination or form their new faith-based organizations and worship. Most of the churches have participated in developing the communities by sponsoring schools in Boston which has impacted positively to the society as early as 16 century. Although a good number of the populations are Catholics, there are multiple of denominations in the country unlike in the Haiti country of Latin America.

Education

In most countries, education vary from one state to another, for instance, the Haitian education is kind of different from that of Boston, Mass in the manner that the Haitian education is based on the French system. The Higher education is under the responsibility of the Ministry of Education, is provided by universities and other public or rather private organizations. Education plays a significant role in the development of any country. The back borne of the nation is knowledge and without this there may be little to admire. For instance, the early emergency of schools, colleges and universities from 1635-1821, gave birth to the vibrant technologies that were discovered by then and played a major role in the growth of the country. Technology became a factor of growth in those early days. As a result, many people came to the city and its surroundings for either enrolling in the colleges and universities or looking for the employment in the already established research centers that became a center of employment. In 1776 after the U.S. independence, many research institutions emerged that gave birth to a knowledgeable society as opposed to the Latin American country where there was delayed I dependence resulting to delayed development. The U.S. was characterized by early high level of technologies that engineered its early stable GDP across the Northern and the Southern America. During the 16c and 17c up to 18c, U.S developed considerably and enabled it to claim the power superiority in the 19 century. What took place in U.S. as a whole could reciprocate in its constituent states and cities like Boston.

Boston developed as a result of knowledgeable man power that gave good technological advice in various institutions in the city and the end of 17 century there was tangible progress technological could be seen without asking. Boston became known across the cities of the United States of America. Unlike in Haiti, where there was minimal number of schools and delayed realization of the importance of education, in 17 century and the start of 18 century, there was little development in education sector. This resulted to high illiteracy level, juvenile delinquency and the involvement of youths to abuse of drugs. Latin American countries are characterized by drug trafficking and is a historic difference that draws a line between the U.S. and the Latin America country like Haiti. In there are multiple number of primary schools counting to 15,200, out of this 90% are non-governmental schools and are normally managed by the communities, religious institutions or NGOs. The rate for enrollment in primary school is slightly above 65% but unfortunately a lower number of this reaches to 6^th grade, an estimate of 30% or less reaches the grade 6^th. In secondary schools, a smaller number of less than 21% enrolls. With poor leadership that has contributed to low focus on education, the Haitian people lacks enough schools to accommodate the students.

According to statistics therefore, although the literacy level is above 50% but it still needs to grow higher than this. Many reformers advocate for free primary education. Unlike in Boston, where it’s known as an intellectual center with more than 100 colleges and universities located along the Greater Boston Area, with more than 250,000 students that attends college classes in Boston and Cambridge. There are multiple of universities and colleges that accommodate the large population of Boston unlike in Haiti where there are limited numbers of schools and most of the students do not get the quality education expected of them. Over 56,000 students from pre-Kindergarten enroll to grade 12 and this system operates in 145 schools across Boston. With graduation rate of 82% this symbolizes over 87% literacy levels as opposed to Haiti where a small portion of students are admitted in the schools, colleges and universities. Due to this limited number, many remain uneducated.

Economy

In Boston there is a vibrant economic hub. Firstly, the economy of the country depends on the skills, knowledge and the technology. The early realization of the need to establish the research institution in the U.S. and in Boston played a role in the growth of economy. The economists came in and advised the concerned departments as need demanded to enable them work towards the achievement of a common goal. The multiple numbers of universities and colleges in the country also contributed highly to its regional economy. The schools have become the major employers and this has attracted the emergency of couple of industries in the city and its region. It has become a home for many technological companies and more so a centre for biotechnology. Apart from funds that come from National Institute of Health, it also enjoys tourist attractions that contribute largely on its economy. Its position as a state capital and the regional home of federal agencies, law and government are other main factor of the Boston’s economy.

In addition to that, financial services also do an integral part in building the economy of the city. Unlike in Haiti, where corruption has become the order of the day, the country’s economy largely relied on mining of varies natural resources such as gold, copper, calcium carbonate, bauxite, hydropower and marble. Although these were not found in larger quantities and over a period of time the mining came to an end. The Haitian people depend entirely on exporting mangoes and coffee which at the same time are not in large quantities. With the high number of unemployment and underemployment, and corrupt leaders that led the country, most of the its people rely on informal employment working as casuals in small-scale farms. Poor way of living has contributed much on its ailing economy. Unlike Boston, Haitian people depend on foreign Aid.

Politics

It’s based on presidential where the president is elected directly from the populace. Although Haiti had a successful slave revolution, it has suffered a long history of dictators and coups. Right from its early political leaders there has media claims of poor leadership and abuse of the office by those leaders. Not forgetting corruption that led the country’s economy considerably. With poor administration in Haiti, there remain fewer good things to be discussed. Unlike Haiti, with its good leadership from the leaders it has had since history, Boston enjoys good democracy among all. Its politics is based on a strong mayor-council government system in the mayor is vested with extensive executive powers. The mayor is duly elected for a period of four years. We also have the Boston City Council which holds its elections after every two years. We also have nine district seats and each of them is elected by the duelers of that district through plurality voting, and four at-large seats. In addition to these governmental structures, we also have numerous commissions and state authorities. The politics in Boston is done without favor and it’s always free and fair.

Conclusion

The historical conditions that brought about the difference between Boston and Haiti.

Haiti has a regional history as the first independent nation in Latin America and also the first country led by a black in the midst of racism when it gained independence as part of successful slave revolution in 1804. Haiti is the only predominantly Francophone independent nation in the Americas. Right from independence it has had 32 attempts of coups accompanied by poor leadership, corruption and little resources. Also poor living conditions of the people with large slum. Unlike Boston where it has enjoyed good political arena to its people, good leadership, better living conditions by the people. Better education systems that provided employment to the people and good democracy that has enabled better leadership. In summary, the political and economic set up in the two countries draws a line of difference that results to one state being highly rich and developed (Boston) contrary to the other (Haiti)
