Today, it is extremely difficult to distinguish who is the modern man of the new generation, and how he or she should act. As far as the society is diverse and the notion of a person is significant, everyone should be ready to decide whether to accept modern phenomenon and reject old traditions or vice versa.
Some years ago, a marriage between two persons of the same sex was considered as a barbaric action and an antireligious practice. Gays and lesbians had to hide their identity because it could interfere with their career development and personal life, or even provoke either a trivial mockery or social condemnation. If one looks deeper into the history of humanity, of course, one can find numerous examples of the same-sex relationship. Perhaps, Ancient China and Japan were among the first locations where such type of relationship was mentioned. Even today, for example, in Japan, same-sex relationships do not cause heated debate, because this action has never been considered from the point of morality or religion, it has been believed to be a sort of entertainment. Moreover, Buddhist Monasteries were among the places where the same-sex relationships were usually practiced. This fact proves that some religions have already supported or at least accepted such forms of relationship. However, it should be noted that most religions are against the idea of homosexual marriage and family.

Indeed, modern society treats same-sex relations and homosexuals with more understanding and tolerance than earlier. In a modern world, more than a dozen countries have already permitted and legalized same-sex marriage. In the U.S., same-sex marriages are allowed only in some states, such as Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont (Deprez n.p.).
Every year, despite all sorts of demonstrations and campaigns against gay marriage, more people support this position, choose this type of relationship, and this phenomenon gains more and more popularity. Statistics show that, with each year, older people understand and tolerate same-sex relationships more often. Furthermore, the current U.S. President, Barak Obama, in a recent statement of 9 May 2012, has stated that he supports gay marriage and will do his best to protect and help sexual minorities (Gast n.p.).
In modern society, few people condemn gay marriage. They think that it is unnatural and immoral kind of relationships and a destructive social process. This point of view is supported by most religious organizations and conservative groups. On the other hand, in 2005, the American Anthropological Association stated that marriage should be allowed for both heterosexual and homosexual couples. They mentioned that the Institute of a family had been developing for hundreds of years, and different types of relationships had been supporting social structure of different societies for many centuries (American Anthropological Association n.p.).
The views of different parties of the conflict disagree; therefore, there is no right answer to the question. People are all the same and cannot be someone to meet specific criteria and expectations of the majority. Since the adoption of the law on the same-sex marriages, nothing terrible has happened in the world. It is quite understandable why people, who love each other, want to enter into marriage. After all, no one can make a person change and reject his or her identity.
In conclusion, it is obvious that there is no right answer to the problem of the same-sex marriages. Representatives of different social groups have opposite minds and prove their points of view with certain evidence and facts. Nevertheless, each person should understand clearly that everyone has an inalienable right to choose.
